Abstract: I discuss the formation of the stellar IMF from competition between accreting seeds. I consider a fixed distribution of accreting cores to isolate the essential features of gas accretion when dust acts as the cooling agent. The proto-star mass spectrum is found to break at low masses, while the high-mass end is suggestive of a Salpeter profile. The global star formation efficiency is derived and found to drop sharply when the seeds are distributed at constant Jeans length in a dense environment.
