Abstract: One of the key ingredients in the solar cycle is the formation of magnetic flux tubes, which eventually appear as sunspots, from a large scale dynamo-generated field. In order to try and understand this process we have investigated the three-dimensional nonlinear evolution of a layer of magnetic field that is susceptible to a magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The nonlinear evolution is eventually dominated by vortex interactions, leading to the formation of arched magnetic structures.
