Abstract: |
The size and complexity of the VLT require an integrated approach to the handling of science data associated with the operation of the observatory. In this paper, we present the VLT Data Flow concept: a strategy to fulfill the scientific requirements outlined in the VLT Science Operation Plan---namely, ensure optimal efficiency and a high, constant, and predictable data quality. The VLT Data Flow model has been designed following an object-oriented methodology. In the analysis phase, we were able to get a clear understanding of the problem domain, and in the design phase to partition the system into smaller parts with well identified responsibilities. Prototypes are being implemented, and will be tested on the New Technology Telescope (NTT). They will allow us to clarify the astronomical requirements, verify the system architecture, and determine whether new technologies, such as distributed object environments, are appropriate. |
