Abstract: |
Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) studies of circular polarization provide a new probe of the physics of extragalactic radio jets. In addition to a brief review of past results from VLBA circular polarization studies, we present preliminary new results on the famous radio galaxy 3C 84. These images reveal very strong circular polarization in a complex distribution with both positive and negative signs. We interpret a strong spot of positive circular polarization as originating from an unusual region of highly ordered magnetic field in the jet. This region cannot be too much smaller than our beam, ∼ 0.5 light years. |
