Abstract: |
We observed the Local Group dwarf ellipticals M32 and NGC 205 in their entirety every clear night over a 4.5 month interval and discovered one nova each in M32 and NGC 205. The nova in M32 was verified with spectra and archival HST images. The nova in NGC 205 had an unusually low peak luminosity (MV = −5.1). Its classification as a nova is based on archival HST images which indicate an outburst amplitude of >7.5 magnitudes and its light curve which resembles the light curves of the faintest novae. Assuming this object is correctly identified, we report a high bulk nova rate for M32 of 2+2.4 −1.0 yr−1 and NGC 205 of 2+2.2 −1.0 yr−1. |
