Abstract: ROSAT Wide Field Camera data from the all-sky survey observation of the closest W UMa contact binary, 44 i Boo, seem to show the formation, evolution, and decay of ``hot material'' between the two stars in the system. During a follow-up HRI observation, a second, similar, event was seen. Using the multi-phase observations it is possible to place constraints on the location of this material. It is even possible to demonstrate in the HRI observation that this material is moving between the two stars. Such ``mass transfer events'' would appear to be quite common events within contact binaries, and must be related to the gradually (or even quite abrupt) period changes seen in these systems.
