Abstract: The use of the Mg II feature to evaluate the level of chromospheric activity in late-type stars has been adopted by many researchers. In the present communication, we test the possibility of using IUE low resolution measurements as indication of the level of activity for late-type binaries. The actual values in terms of a ``photometric'' index I(Mg II) have been compared with results from high resolution spectra as well as with indices obtained for non-active stars. The data base of binary systems with activity indicators in the ultraviolet range is thus significantly enlarged.
