Abstract: ASCA observations of the young rapidly rotating star AB Doradus are analysed with special emphasis on its flaring behaviour. Multitemperature model fits with either fixed or variable abundances are used. The results for the quiescent emission are compared with those obtained previously by Mewe et al. (1996) confirming the very low coronal metallicity (nearly one tenth solar) of this star in spite of its measured solar photospheric metallicity. The results for the flares are compared with recent models based on full hydrodynamic calculations (Reale et al. 1997) and realistic values for the loop length and the heating duration are derived. It is shown that the flare is essentially a high temperature phenomenon with little effect on the low-temperature component of the quiescent star.
