Abstract: Spectroscopic observations of a peculiar nova V445 Pup were carried out at Asiago Observatory from January 14 to April 2, 2001. The most prominent emission line in the optical region at λ658.9 nm was identified as a blend of C II 657.8 and 658.3 nm. The other emission lines were of Na I, Fe II, C II, C III, Mg II, He I etc., but no hydrogen line was seen. Two sets of interstellar absorption components of Na I D1 and D2, whose radial velocities were +36.2 km s−1 and +91.6 km s−1, were seen. We estimated the interstellar extinction at E(B−V) ≥ 1.0, and the distance to the nova at about 3.5 kpc.
