We present initial results of a pointed ASCA observation of the L1517 star-forming region centered on the classical T Tauri star (CTTS) SU Aurigae. This G2-type star has the highest X-ray luminosity of any CTTS in the Taurus-Auriga region and optical spectra provide evidence for both mass inflow and outflow. The ~40 ksec ASCA observation spanned ~31 hours of elapsed time, or about 40% of the estimated 2.98 day rotation period. Strong X-ray emission was detected from SU Aur (L_X = 10^{30.91} ergs s^{-1}), and weaker emission was detected from three other nearby T Tauri stars. The ASCA data for SU Aur reveal two new features of its X-ray emission which place constraints on the emission process. Specifically, the count rate undergoes slow low-amplitude variability on a timescale of ~1 day and the emission measure is dominated by very hot plasma at a temperature near ~31 MK. We briefly discuss possible origins of the X-ray emission and its variability. |
