Abstract: We present observations of two young brown dwarf candidates (~ Myr) within the Taurus and rho Oph star forming regions. The source in Taurus exhibits optical and IR spectra intermediate between M6V and M6III. Consequently, the effective temperature is uncertain for this source and it could fall on either side of the hydrogen burning limit (~0.08-0.15 M_odot). The optical spectrum of the object in rho Oph also shows both dwarf and giant features, but we derive a spectral type of M8.5 and we use the latest evolutionary tracks to derive a substellar mass of ~0.035+/-0.015 M_odot.
