Abstract: |
This review concentrates on the mass and extent of each of the Magellanic Clouds, on the ages of the oldest LMC clusters, on the ages of RR Lyraes, and on the [lack of?] existence of ancient horizontal-branch stars. It ends with two cautions: first, that spectroscopy is essential for interpreting the deep color-magnitude diagrams being delivered by WFPC2 on HST; and second, that the metallicity distribution of ``halo'' fields in the SMC and especially in the LMC is not what one would expect from what one sees in the Milky Way halo. Because the line-of-sight depths of the Clouds were considered to be important topics at the meeting, I have gone into more detail in this review than I did at the meeting itself. |
