Abstract: Ultra-precise stellar distances can in some circumstances be derived from Hipparcos parallaxes in combination with proper motions and a kinematical model of the stars. One such case is the Hyades open cluster, where individual parallaxes with a precision of about 0.3 mas have been derived. The improved parallaxes give a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with a much more well-defined main sequence compared with the original Hipparcos parallaxes. If known binaries are excluded, the HR diagram for the Hyades reveals a very narrow main sequence (RMS spread < 0.07~mag in MHp).
