Abstract: We identified two subgroups among the Hickson Compact galaxy Groups (HCGs): I - the elongated, chain-like groups, and II - the spherical ones. By comparison of some parameters of both subgroups (e.g. elongation, velocity dispersion, presence of interacting members) it is shown that HCGs are real physical entities, and that in the chain-like groups member galaxies are moving in very elongated orbits along the chains. Processes of interaction and merging are more efficient in chain-like groups, and hence their life-times are shorter than that of the spherical groups.
