Abstract: We present a combined ROSAT and ASCA analysis of the QSO E 1821+643. The data are compatible with a QSO embedded in a cluster of galaxies with a strong cooling flow, an ambient temperature T>=4keV and a metallicity Z<=0.4Z⊙. The thermal emission from the cluster is responsible for part of the strong observed iron line emission but can not provide it all. A second source of line emission, either intrinsic to the QSO or due to reprocessing in the dense gas of the cluster cooling flow, is identified. We suggest that, together with IRAS 09104+4109 and HS 0624+6907, E 1821+643 forms a new class of high luminosity, radio-quiet quasar associated with rich environments.
