Abstract: Outbursts of luminous blue variables can be mistaken for supernovae (SNe) in nearby galaxies. Spectroscopy alone is often not enough to identify the true nature of the object as some SNe have very similar spectra. Knowledge of the luminosity and spectroscopic evolution of the object is often necessary to be certain in distinguishing SNe from the impostors.
