Abstract: |
A radial velocity survey of the components of visual multiple stars has been done since 1994 with the correlation radial velocity meter. It reveals that a significant proportion of the components (22%) contain additional sub-systems with periods under 100 days. Examples of newly found components are given and the problems of finding the exact multiplicity degree of stellar systems are discussed. Our results indicate that close and wide sub-systems cannot be considered as a result of an independent random combination, but are related by a common origin. It is possible that almost all close binaries with periods less than 10 days have more distant components which assisted in the formation of the close pairs by taking away their angular momentum. |
