Abstract: Determining the age and metallicity of stars independently in elliptical galaxies is now possible, at least in a relative sense. This allows us to further test the merger hypothesis by constructing a `merger sequence' for timescales well after the tidal tails have dissappeared. I briefly show that these spectroscopic ages indicate the time since the last major episode of star formation in elliptical galaxies and that this starburst affects the position of the galaxy relative to the fundamental plane. Such ages will also be useful for constraining galaxy formation models.
