Abstract: I review single dish ``on--the--fly'' mapping, both line and continuum, based on work that I have done at the JCMT. I discuss simple guidelines that ensure successful mapping and give examples that show what one can do with a single pixel receiver. My examples are taken from well known star forming regions and molecular clouds. I also discuss how to properly calibrate and reduce continuum maps and what the limitations are, especially when we compare these maps to those obtained with array receivers like SCUBA.
