Abstract: |
Using spectroscopic data for a selection of edge-on spiral galaxies, we attempt to address the issue of how Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) halos are energized. Data are interpreted in the context of a pure photo-ionization model with an increasing temperature with z. Such a model can explain the general trend of an increase in ratios of forbidden lines to Balmer lines observed in these galaxies. However, the ionization fraction of O++ indicated by the [OIII]/Hα ratio in NGC 5775 cannot be explained by such a scenario, indicating the need for an additional source of ionization. |
