Abstract: Using the B-I color index in the radial photometry of M51 we detect an asymmetric sawtooth-like shape in the density pattern of the galactic arms, similar to that produced by a progressive wave traveling in a preexisting spiral pattern. We suggest that M51 could be a spiral galaxy before the encounter with the companion.
