Abstract: |
We have combined Hα and HI images of eight ring galaxies to investigate the factors regulating starburst activity on large scales. Starburst activity is strongly correlated with the attainment of very high HI surface densities (ΣHI) in the outer rings, implying that star formation triggering in the rings results from the confinement of 90% of the pre-collision galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM) to the ring for >100 Myr timescales. Gravitational stability arguments can account for the suppression |
