Abstract: The high angular resolution of NICMOS on the HST, together with the reduced extinction at near-infrared wavelengths, allows an unprecedented view of the star formation activity in the centers of galaxies. In this paper I summarize recent results on the star formation activity in different extragalactic environments, such as H ii regions in the central regions of nearby galaxies, and the central regions of two LIRGs: Arp 299 and NGC 1614. I also discuss the properties of the newly discovered populations of stellar clusters and giant H ii regions in LIRGs.
