Abstract: Empirical population synthesis is used to study the stellar content of nearby galaxies described in Kennicutt's atlas using a probabilistic approach based on the Metropolis algorithm to sample the parameter space. The synthesis results are probability distributions for the components of the population vector vec x = (x1,x2,..,x12) which represents the fractions of light due to each base component. The population vectors obtained for these galaxies bear a strong correspondence with the morphological types, in the usual sense that later-type galaxies have proportionally larger populations of younger stars than early-type ones.
