Abstract: Currently our most complete view of protoplanetary disks, the place where planets form, and where the building blocks of life-bearing worlds are produced, is for disks around Herbig Ae stars. We review the data for the presence of circumstellar disks, the characteristic disk constituents, the coupling between the disk and the star, and the evolution of activity signatures over the first 10 Myr of the Herbig Ae star's lifetime. The more fragmentary data for Herbig Be stars is reviewed with implications for detection of x-rays from these stars, and for survival of circumstellar disks.
