Abstract: |
The commissioning year of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey has demonstrated that cataclysmic variables of many types have been missed in previous surveys. We report the discovery of 19 new systems, and the follow-up results on 3 with the APO 3.5m telescope. All 3 have orbital periods under the gap with two systems being dwarf novae and the third a likely polar which eclipses its region of line emission. Based on these results, we can expect to find at least 400 new CVs by the completion of the survey. Most of these will be faint systems with low accretion rates, allowing tests of close binary evolution models. |
