Abstract: The disc instability model presumably accounts for the eruptions of dwarf novae and soft X-ray transients. I review its main properties, with a particular emphasis on its most recent developments, which may help in accounting for the deficiencies of the model. Effects such as illumination and deviations from axisymmetry are probably very important ingredients.
