Abstract: Chandra observations of hot hydrogen-rich white dwarfs allowed us to extend our study of their atmospheric metallicity to the extreme case of GD 246. Dupuis, Vennes, & Chayer (in prep.) report the detection of Fe V/VI/VII absorption lines in the Chandra LETG spectrum of GD 246 which imposes a low and possibly inhomogeneous abundance of iron in its atmosphere. Similar observations of HZ 43 impose an even lower limit to the iron abundance which suggests the effect of on-going chemical separation. Non-LTE spectral simulations show that additional iron abundance studies with Chandra would offer unique insights into the problem of the spectral evolution of white dwarf stars.
