Abstract: Thermal X-ray emission from several manifestations of neutron stars (NSs) has been observed since the late 1970s. These spectra can provide clues toward the properties of the stellar surface which are inaccessible from studies of the synchrotron radiation generated in the NS environment. Interpretation of this thermal emission will, in general, require detailed model atmosphere calculations. Although tabulations of such models have become more readily available, blackbody fits to these spectra remain the norm. We discuss the discrepancies associated with blackbody fits to thermal NS spectra, and consequences for optical magnitude estimates.
