Abstract: APEX (Astronomical Point source EXtractor), a general point source extractor software, has been developed and implemented for reducing astronomical image data from the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). Detection of faint sources is accomplished via optimal linear matched filtering. Image segmentation with point source probabilities is used to improve detection performance. Estimation of flux and other point source parameters, as well as point source de-blending, is done using a modified simplex algorithm, developed specifically for these purposes. Varying point response functions (PRFs) across the image field are also handled. This software will be a major component of the automated SIRTF data processing pipelines, and can also be used as a stand-alone program by users.
