Abstract: A new era of technology development will enable significant improvements in VLBI observational capabilities. More bandwidth will be available and this will render existing correlators obsolete. Recent architecture and program developments will enable future correlators to meet these challenges not only in bandwidth handling capability but also in field of view, spectral resolution, interference robustness, and flexibility. In addition, with advances in technology engineers face increasingly complex logic design and speed problems. Fortunately, new and emerging industry tools and methodologies permit more rapid design of logic circuits and assist with signal and timing analysis. This paper will review correlator design issues, design challenges that engineers face, new and emerging design methodologies and tools, some correlator architecture and program developments, and how the EVLA correlator now under construction will benefit VLBI.
