Abstract: We provide an overview of the observations of amplitude and frequency variability in pulsating white dwarf stars. Whereas this phenomenon can be quite helpful for asteroseismological investigations because more and more normal modes of pulsation can be detected over time, it can also complicate the astrophysical interpretations of the pulsations. A number of instructive examples is given, some common features in the behaviour of different objects are pointed out and ideas that may help to understand the physical cause of amplitude and frequency variations are sketched.
