Abstract: The problem of the relaxation to a Maxwellian of the Landau kinetic equation is solved numerically to examine in detail the nature of the approach of the distribution function of stars in the Galaxy to equilibrium. The problem is solved as an initial value problem for stars situated in a uniformly smeared out background of a few thousand giant molecular clouds. Comparison of the exact numerical solutions with analytical estimations based on the simple Chandrasekhar (1960) "molecular-kinetic" theory shows that in some cases the difference between them is not negligibly small, and a probable reason for this is advanced.
