Abstract: At the conference, we presented a preliminary investigation into why half of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected by deep X-ray surveys lack signs of accretion in their optical spectra. We have now expanded that research as Rigby et al. (2006). In this proceeding, we summarize the reasons such “optically–dull” AGN are important, as well as our conclusions regarding the causes of optical dullness, and refer the reader to Rigby et al. (2006) for a more in-depth discussion.
