Abstract: The International Astronomical Union has proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, citing the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first astronomical use of the telescope as an opportunity to help citizens rediscover their place in the universe and to stimulate worldwide interest in astronomy. This paper summarizes emerging plans for NASA Science Mission Directorate participation in the International Year of Astronomy, based on community meetings with education and public outreach (EPO) professionals affiliated with NASA’s space science missions. The resulting framework has broad applicability and potential for collaboration across and beyond NASA.
