Abstract: The physics of forming galaxies constrains their evolution in a highly nonlinear way. Observational phenomenology motivates the need for negative feedback to operate via supernova explosions in disk galaxies and via AGN outflows for quenching star formation in massive early-type galaxies. AGN-triggered and supernova-enhanced positive feedback may also be required to account both for ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and the presence of extremely red galaxies at high redshift.
