Abstract: |
We discuss the nature and composition of dust produced in the outflows of evolved stars. Most information on dust properties is derived from infrared spectroscopy of stars, and the comparison of these observations to laboratory and computed spectra of cosmic dust analogs. Stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) show a very rich diversity of dust compositions, that reflect the physical and chemical conditions in the dust forming layers. Binarity can lead to complex circumstellar dust geometries and the co-existence of O-rich and C-rich dust. Post-AGB stars show evidence for substantial alterations of the dust as it enters the interstellar medium. |
