Abstract: |
The recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi belongs to the class of S-type symbiotic binaries. It provides an important link in our understanding of interacting binaries with evolved companions and has been suggested as a plausible Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitor. In this article, I will give a brief introduction into some of the basic elements of binary evolution theory, emphasizing the uncertainties in the present theory, and review the present status of our understanding of SN Ia progenitors. I then put RS Oph into this context and argue that it provides an excellent SN Ia progenitor, provided that the white dwarf is a CO white dwarf. |
