Abstract: |
We present the first volume-limited Spitzer-IRS search for AGN activity in the most bolometrically luminous galaxies (LIR ≈ (0.3−20) × 1010 Lʘ) to D < 15 Mpc. We unambiguously identify AGNs in ≈ 27% of the galaxies, ≈ 50% of which are not identified with optical spectroscopy. We discover that the optically unidentified AGNs have comparable luminosities to the optically identified AGNs and are hosted in a wide range of galaxy types (S0−Sd). However, by constrast, we find that optically unidentifed AGNs are more likely to reside in heavily dust-obscured starburst galaxies than optically identified AGNs. |
