Abstract: |
Data assimilation is an analysis technique in which observed information is accumulated into a model state by taking advantage of consistency constraints with laws of time evolution and physical properties. Practically, data assimilation is carried out by estimating an unknown probability density function recursively over time using incoming measurements and a model for a stochastic process. The true state is assumed to be unobservable and the measurements are the observed states of a hidden model. In this contribution I will give a short overview on data assimilation techniques and suggest how data assimilation could be useful for helio- and asteroseismology.
