| Abstract: |
HII Regions in the far gaseous outskirts of galaxies provide a unique opportunity to probe the star-formation history, evolution, and origin of the gas. Following a systematic search of a sample of “normal" gas-rich galaxies (SINGG), and a separate sample of interacting, disturbed, or extended HI-disk galaxies (HI Rogues: Collection of maps of HI in Weird Galaxies and Weird HI in otherwise Normal Galaxies), we have catalogued and confirmed over 50 outlying HII regions located far beyond the main optical components of galaxies ( r > 2 × r25 ). Here, we will discuss their frequency, and several follow-up studies currently underway or completed that address questions about the nature of star formation in the low-density gas outside of galaxies. |
