Abstract: Over the next 15 years the nascent field of gravitational-wave astronomy will open a new observational window on black hole mergers at cosmological distances. Here we review recent work by the gravitational-wave community modelling how well future data will measure the distribution in mass and redshift of black hole mergers, and highlighting the potential impact of these observations for improving constraints on galaxy formation models, and the origin of the first black hole seeds.
