Abstract: We present an analysis of the far-ultraviolet spectra of three DB white dwarfs secured with the FUSE observatory. Transitions associated with various carbon ions are detected in all three objects. The abundance of carbon, and upper limits on the abundances of other heavy elements, are determined from the FUSE spectra. A possible mechanism involving a competition between gravitational settling and mass loss is suggested to account for the presence of carbon in DB stars.
