Abstract: The results of extensive studies of the VUV photophysics of a number of prebiotic molecules are discussed in the context of the survivability of these species under various conditions of irradiation and settings corresponding to the interstellar medium, planetary atmospheres and cometary and asteroidal environments. They are thus applicable to similar stellar conditions and planetary environments, and are also pertinent for identifying markers that can be associated with the presence or possible future existence of life on exoplanets.
