Abstract: |
Studies of the solar corona have found evidence of high-frequency
low-energy flaring that would be enough to explain the heating of the solar
corona. The same physical process is taking place in other stars. To date
only three massive star forming regions: Orion, Cygnus OB2 and Taurus have
been studied in detail. The aims of this work are to perform a similar
study in the supermassive star-cluster Trumpler 16. Also, we studied the
relationship, if any, between the presence of a circumstellar disk and the
flare frequency. Through a maximum likelihood algorithm, we have
characterized the variability of the stars in our sample and obtained the
flare frequency and energy distribution. In this work, we present the first
results. The selection of stars with infrared excesses has been made using
an independent extinction index. We detected 129 flares in the 1035 X-ray
sources of Trumpler 16. Flare energy distribution can be described as a
power law with an index α = -1.86 ± 0.1. Approximately 11.8% of
the stars with a disk had a flare (14.3% of the stars without disk). The
flare energy distribution slope suggests that the micro-flaring may play an
important role in coronal heating, although it is probably not the only process. |
