Abstract: The Data Flow System (DFS) provides the software infrastructure for supporting the end-to-end operations of the La-Silla Paranal Observatory observing facilities. It is a distributed system composed of a collection of components for the preparation, scheduling and execution of observations, archiving of data, pipeline data reduction and quality control. The evolution of the system since its inception in 1995 until today is presented in this paper. New instruments, changes in the operational model, user requests as well as new/evolving technologies have been the motivation for changes in the system. Some examples are presented and analyzed together with some of the lessons learned. Future developments to support the E-ELT are also presented.
