Abstract: |
We give a brief summary on the current status of coronal seismology
and anticipate research opportunities for ATST in this discipline.
Given the optical/infrared spectral range and the high-resolution
magnetic field capabilities of ATST (≈ 0.05″–0.1″),
the potential of exploring coronal seismology includes:
(1) Optical detection of coronal waves and oscillations,
(2) high-resolution magnetic field modeling with accurate determination
of Alfvénic speeds, and (3) correlative studies that investigate
the coupling between photospheric waves (detected in optical wavelengths)
and coronal waves, which will provide insights into the generation mechanism
of coronal waves, the origin and efficiency of coronal heating by waves,
and diagnostics on flare and CME processes by global waves. |
