Abstract: We report high quality data for the 2009.0 spectroscopic event in η Carinae, in particular for the He II λ4686 line, taken at high dispersion with 6 telescopes. The intrinsic luminosity LHe II λ4686 = 270 L just before periastron reveals the presence of a luminous transient UV source, produced by the shocked primary's wind. The pre-periastron peaks are correlated with those seen in X-rays and are produced by clumps in the primary's wind. After disappearing at phase φ = 0.004, the line rises again, when X-rays are still absent, reaching a maximum at φ = 0.02, which seems to be caused by a collapse of the wind-wind collision onto the “surface” of the secondary star.
