Abstract: Using solar p-mode frequencies measured in “medium-ℓ” observations by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI), we address the performance of different recent versions of the equation of state of the non-ideal solar plasma in accurately reproducing the profile of the adiabatic exponent Γ1 in the adiabatically-stratified part of the solar convective envelope. Among the models constructed with two versions of the OPAL and two versions of the SAHA-S equation of state, the best agreement with seismic data is obtained using the recently developed SAHA-S3 equation of state. We implement the same seismic analysis for calibrating the heavy-element abundance in the solar convective envelope. Here, all our results support unambiguously the recent reduction of the solar Z value obtained in spectroscopic measurements.
