Abstract: The launch of ESA's Gaia satellite is around the corner and the mission is unique in many ways. A particularly interesting aspect is the astrometric calibration that has to be determined to very high accuracies to achieve the ambitious mission goals. In this situation, applying the general principle of self-calibration is an absolute necessity and an elegant approach at the same time. We combine this with a generic modelling scheme at the data processing end to get a very attractive and flexible overall calibration concept.
